Advice on bug report

Hi all,

I'm going to send a bug report on Sarge, but I can't determine which package is causing the problem. The Debian BTS page suggests to ask debian-user in such cases, so here I am.

The problem is, I have a laptop (Dell Latitude C640) that, when I'm in my office, I connect to an external monitor through a docking station. Even though I've set the "PanelOff" option in my X configuration (video card is Radeon 7500 mobility), the panel's backlight turns on when I log into Gnome.

I think that some program is doing that during the Gnome startup process, but I don't know which. It seems to happen when the Gnome splash screen is displaying "window manager", thus I suspect metacity, but I'm not sure. There might be some delay between the splash screen and the actual programs running. So it might also be gnome-session, or nautilus, or don't know what.

Any advice?

Thank you
Gerardo
