the installation is pretty straight forward. the administration
is very ease, if you use apt...
if you know, how to work with config files, then you
are able to install and administer debian sarge ;-)

You do not need a whole dvd. If you want to install,
all you need is to download the netinstaller - image for sarge and use
that one. debian packages are installed online by using apt. iptables based
firewalling depends on the kernel and the debian sarge kernel includes
the netfilter package. if you need a frontend, i would suggest shorewall.
install it by typing apt-get install shorewall as root. If you want some
other packages for firewall configuration have a look at packages.debian.org
