Apache

I've tried repeatedly to install Apache + PHP + Mysql.
IT DOES NOT WORK. I've tried everything from apache2-mdm-prefork,
libapache2-mod-php, apache, libapache-mod-php, plus all the other
necessities (keeping mysql usually stationery, i haven't even gotten
to using it).
I think i've configured httpd.conf/apache2.conf the right way...but
Mozilla/Firefox keep on giving me the same results: they don't
recognize the file.
I don't enable suexec, is that the problem? should the .php file be in
\var\www? I've tried to put it there, but it still doesn't work...
