Have you tried different roots, like /dev/sda2? It sure helped me.

No, i haven't done that yet but why would i want to use sda2 when the root device is /dev/hda? I also tried with and without initrd and also with a kernel that has ext3, lvm and a number of other things compiled in.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestion, i'll try that this evening.
