Thank you to all suggesting cups-pdf + xpdf they seem an ideal suite to me.If, I'd have understood you to begin with... :)
Did not mean to be ironic Greg. Really thank you (and other friends helping). My original question was about cups-pdf but in the course of the thread the switch to xpdf was a very welcome addition to my package arsenal :)
