Login at the console and try `xinit -- :1 >& xinit.log' after making
sure that you move your .xinitrc and .xsession out of the way. If you
get a terminal, then try running gnome-session from there. Otherwise
look into xinit.log file for the error messages. You and also try
removing the file .ICEauthority and .Xauthority from your home
directory and try.
