broken grep and gzip

Recently egrep and gzip started seg faulting every time they're run.  So 
I removed them and tried to re-install them with apt-get and then dpkg. 
I get "Setting up grep (2.4.2-3) ...", but it just sits there forever. 
Is there a way to see what is going wrong here?  I'd install the two 
packages from source, but then dpkg doesn't know about them.
