You are right :-)
I´m not specially lover of graphical login, but is the easiest way I
know to choose. But i´m sure there is a lot of ways to do it (is the
advantage of free software, isn´t it?)
An option can be to remove gdm (or kdm...) from /etc/init.d/ and
launch it when you need it.
And only for learn another way, ¿how would you do it?
