That gives you an Xserver, but not anything much to run on it. A better start
than "xserver-xfree86" is "x-window-system-core".
You also need a window manager (blackbox, icewm, etc.), and some X programs to
use. If you want to have X start on boot, and present a graphical login,
rather than having to login at the console and run X manually for your own
account, then you'll need a display manager: xdm, or wdm.
Finally, if you want a "modern desktop" with everything that entails
(including specialised window managers) you'll probably be better off with
KDE or GNOME (in that order of preference, imho). For those, (on sid at
least; probably small differences on woody) you can do "apt-get install kde"
or "apt-get install gnome".
