totem DVD play and sound and device busy

In a recently reinstalled Sid on a Dell Inspiron 5160, I notice that while using alsa and playing a DVD from the DVD drive using totem player, it conflicts with the system sounds which I have enabled in Gnome.

I have this as my /etc/esound/esd.conf:
#-------------------------------------
$> cat /etc/esound/esd.conf
[esd]
#auto_spawn=0
auto_spawn=1
#spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 5
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2
spawn_wait_ms=100
# default options are used in spawned and non-spawned mode
default_options=
#-------------------------------------

And libesd-alsa0 is installed. When I initially did "alsaconf" as root after installation, it updated my modules file.

While playing a movie, upon pressing any of the buttons which make a system sound, totem complains that the sound device is busy and just hangs. What am I missing here, what should I check?
