Hmmm ...

Here's what `ls' shows on my almost identical (sarge/testing 2.6.8-2-686)
home machine:

  (home) % ls -l /dev/ptmx
  crw-rw---- 1 root root 5, 2 Mar 8 13:28 /dev/ptmx

*Not* "o+rw". Yet, all works normally at home ...

Actually I had noticed that /dev/ptmx was 660 before writing to d-u.
I manually changed its permissions to 666, and restarted the X server
(C-A-BS) ... no change. Should I have restarted something else as well?

Still strange that my "660" home machine is working like a charm ...

Thanks for your prompt response!
