MySQL 4.1 binaries, Debian Ubuntu post-installation setup

Hello, I have setup MySQL 4.1 on Debian (Ubuntu Warty) from binaries
following these directions:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/installing-binary.html

However, since I didn't use apt-get (which for Ubuntu was 4.0), I need
to add mysql to $PATH and also get MySQL to autostart.  Or at least I
need to know how to start MySQL manually.
