I made my own image (using the Gimp). and then compresses it into a file.  The 
following is the line in my /boot/grub/menu.list file


splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/debian_grub_splash.xpm.gz

This only allows you to select which image to boot, not the boot process 
itself (which I don't want).
