Esto es porque se "pegan" el gpm con el controlador de ratón de las X.
Tienes que cambiar en /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 en la sección InputDevice del ratón
/dev/psaux por /dev/gpmdata
Te quedaría algo tal que así:
Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
