I used -v for verbose and noted some weird errors throughout "lsusb -v":

mke2fs 1.36 (05-Feb-2005)
/dev/sdb is entire device, not just one partition!
Proceed anyway? (y,n) y
mkfs.ext2: No medium found while trying to determine filesystem size
just looking at your lsmod everything looks good you have
the proper modules loaded.
From my understanding with lsusb -v it depends upon that
paticular device, as it appears that usb device does not
support the paticular feature. What I was mostly looking for
was the fact that your devices were recognized, it looks
like it sees them all.
The mkfs error is somewhat distrubing, most of the time using
mkfs with the proper device puts a filesystem on that
device. So just by its failure suggests that the kernel,
hotplug or something else does not pass the proper actions
for a good result, or has troubles
with that device. This can also be seen by the fact that
usb storage module is not being used, you would think that
it would be in use with a memory stick, or drive. Did google
come up with anything of value for Linux in general. I would
also search HP's site with google search site url. Like
this, some search term site:www.hp.com I know this will not
be Debian specific, but it might give you something Linux
specific. If you can find a Linux problem it often leads to
the proper solution, could be as simple as using a newer
version of hotplug, or something like that.
