I've already tried building my own drivers, it makes no difference. My /proc/asound/version:Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.4 (Mon May 17 14:31:44 2004 UTC).

Does it help if you install 1.0.8 alsa-drivers? To do this, build an alsa-modules package for your kernel from the sources in alsa-source using the make-kpkg utility.
