I guess that's the problem. Dpkg itself runs fine (probably eating up most
of the remaining 2MB), but every basic tool it calls (mv, ln) segfaults
immediately. - Is that a frequent situation for you to be that low on RAM?
What has consumed all the other 246MB? Is there a process running that you
presume is using lots of RAM? Try killing it and check whether the Segfaults
are disappearing...
Is all the RAM already consumed immediately after the system has booted, or
only after the system has accumulated a considerable uptime?
