Dpkg itself runs fine (probably eating up most of the remaining 2MB), but every basic tool it calls (mv, ln) segfaults immediately. - Is that a frequent situation for you to be that low on RAM? What has consumed all the other 246MB? Is there a process running that you presume is using lots of RAM? Try killing it and check whether the Segfaults are disappearing...
