Hola Roberto.

telnetting to their IMAP gives:

Trying 213.92.5.61...
Connected to imap.inet.it.
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4REV1 AUTH=LOGIN] imap.inet.it IMAP4rev1 2002.336 at Tue, 22 Feb 2005 18:48:59 +0100 (NFT)

which seems to show their server is from 2002 :(

If no one has suggested open Server Setting -> Maximum number of server connections to cache and set it to 1. Some IMAP servers limit the number of connections per IP and Thunderbird hangs unpredictably if the client number is higher than the server.
