Input/Output Error copying to samba mount

Hiya,

Running debian unstable, connecting to samba mounts on other machines
seems to have a problem.

1) everything has got really really sllllooooww.

i.e. If I: cd ~/mnt/remotemachine/directory ; vi test.txt
vi takes a minute or two to load/save/ etc.

2) I can't overwrite files even though logged in with proper permissions
and smb.conf using 777.

# cp ~/.bashrc test.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `test.txt': Input/output error

if I rm test.txt and then try to copy again, it does so fine (though
painfully slowly....)

pinging the remote machine reveals no network problems.

I've purged and reinstalled samba/samba-common/smbfs

Both machines are debian (using samba because others here are running
windows)...

Any more suggestions on how to fix samba?
