I eventually isolated the problem.  

For some reason, the HPLaserJet drivers and some other "stuff" had
been removed.  I obtained and installed (with a few "dependency
issues") these,

          foomatic-db-hpijs_1.5-20041013-1_all.deb
          hpijs_1.7.1-2_i386.deb

and printing returned.
