You should be able to restart and have it pick up where it left
off.  The build process does use make, after all.

i was just wondering... will this produce a 2.6.*-686 architecture or
2.6.*-386?  how do i get a 686 configuration?


That is entirely dependent on your .config.  If you want a kernel for
386, then choose that.  If you want 686, choose that.  You can also
choose to name the package with or without the architecture in the name
or the version.
