The network code is smart and will spot traffic destined for the local machine and avoid transmitting it over the ethernet. I discovered this years ago when I wanted to do some testing without using a seperate box. At the time I determined this was not possible (it was before Linux had a firewall built in).

You could consider trying to NAT the traffic out on to the lan.
