integrated audio problem

My system is a dell dimension 8400, my sound card is an integrated one from
soundmax (?). My kernel is 2.6.8-2.

When I do 'lspci', I got this
0000:00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

When I do 'lsmod', I got:
snd_intel8x0 37548 0
snd_ac97_codec 69764 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm 100356 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_timer 27780 1 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 12680 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm
gameport 6016 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_mpu401_uart 9344 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_rawmidi 26532 1 snd_mpu401_uart
snd_seq_device 9224 1 snd_rawmidi
snd 59364 7 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device

So, everything looks fine, but there is no output at all when I play mp3 or cd or anything, what could be the problem? Do I need to compile the kernel with something magic enabled? or I need to download a proprietary driver from somewhere?

thanks.
