You know, back in the "good ol' days" when the web as such didn't really
exist yet it was common practice for ftp server admins to include INDEX
files for each directory.

But since there are so many people and data to be managed nowadays it's
just not possible to do this anymore. If I didn't get you wrong and you
were referring to the debian iso images, I'm sure you can find
information about what is contained on the CDs.

I guess if your thinking about downloading them that you have a
reasonably fast connection, so if you want woody it's only 7 CDs anyway.
But AFAIK you only need the first image to get a base install and then
you can download the updates/additional packages with your weapon of
choice (or rather just apt-get since aptitude and synaptic are only
included starting with sarge, I think).
Or if you're planning on running sarge anyway you might just as well
start off with the debian installer (just search the ml-archives for a
link). I can't give you advioce here though since I myself did a woody
CD based install and then upgraded to sarge afterwards.

Greets, Roman.
