Re: eth0: woes

which leads me to believe that this is a low level hardware problem.

Any suggestions? I'm relatively new to debian (more experience with Gentoo)
and I'm a bit lost as to where to look next.

Try this:

/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe 8139too

Retry brining the interface up now: /sbin/ifup eth0

Also, look to see what dmesg outputs.
