Problem recording from microphone

Hi,

I have trouble recording from line-in.
As soon as some program opens /dev/dsp for reading (it seems), a loud humming noise is produced in line-out (and nothing is recorded).

This is my system information, my mainboard (it's a Shuttle XPC SK41G, barebone) has VIA KM266 chipset with integrated audio:

perseus$ uname -a
Linux perseus 2.6.7-1-k7 #1 Thu Jul 8 06:45:35 EDT 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
perseus$

If I'm not mistaken, some of these modules belong to Alsa, is that right?
If I choose Alsa in XMMS, it doesn't work.

Is there anyone else having similar problems?
And is there anymore information I could give?

Sincerly Marcus Lundblad
