I have a serial to USB connector I was experimenting with on a 2.4 and a
2.6.7. kernel. I would get oopses and panics that seemed to be related to
unplugging & replugging the device.  I don't recall the detail anymore and I
haven't gone back to try a more recent kernel (sorry).  

Anyway, you might want to search the linux-usb-users list on sourceforge.
