could you check the output of the following command on your machines?

dpkg -l cups* gnome-cups-manager

what do you mean by "switch to gnome"? Switch from a virtual console to
X? or to startup gnome?

strange. No idea right now...

Maybe there is a problem with gnome-panel. Please check also 
dpkg -l gnome-panel*

Do you get any error messages? Is there anything related to this
in /var/log/syslog?
(watch it during printing with tail -f /var/log/syslog)
