Simpley enter /etc/init.d/xdm stop
That's if you're using xdm. With gdm and kdm it's similar.
Can you circle through the Resolutions with <ctrl><<alt><+> and/or
<ctrl><<alt><->
Can you get to your wanted 1280x1024-Resolution?
IIf yes simply remove the others ones from the modelines and restart
your X.
