/etc/modutils/alsa-base and /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base are
conffiles of the alsa-base package. alsaconf does not
(or at least should not) touch them.
Did alsaconf not create /etc/modprobe.d/sound? If not then
read alsa-base's README.Debian to see how to set one up by
hand. In any case /etc/mod(utils|probe.d)/sound is not
terribly important; it is needed only if you want to use
ALSA's built-in module loading mechanism.
