Have you installed all of the necessary alsa packages?

I have a Compaq Presario 1690 with an ESS Solo sound chipset in it.  I 
also had problems with ALSA and reverted to OSS for now.  However the 
problem I was having was basically no sound and some crackling; I didn't 
get any errors.

Let me know what you find out.
