Probably when you use startx, X uses the wrong dpi value (100 dpi are
preconfigured by default, but this is wrong for most systems). To
verify this, run xdpyinfo after starting X with gdm and startx, and
compare the dpi values. If they are different, set the DisplaySize
value in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and remove the 100 dpi default value
from /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc. This file is read by startx, gdm
probably has its own Xservers file without the 100 dpi default.
