I don't know the answer to your question, but the "correct" way to
configure exim4 is via

dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config

What you might want to do is to purge exim4 (apt-get --purge remove
exim4) then reinstall (to make sure you have a blank-slate).  Then run
dpkg-reconfigure.  If things still don't work after that, send another
post to this list.

FYI, dpkg-reconfigure allows you to make look like mail comes from
someplace.com when it really comes from somewhereelse.com.
