The best I have seen is Maxima. Maxima is more senior to Mathematica.  I 
remember when Wolfram began to develop Mathematica. At the time maxima was 
king and Mathematica was designed as a clone of Maxima written in c instead 
of lisp. 

It is great!!!! I wrote my thesis in math and used it on the old MIT 
mainframe. 

Just apt-get maxima. 

I  did matrix polynomial calculations over finite fields using it. It will do 
integrals and your polynomials are just abc on maxima.

It is the best and thanks to great william shelton for setting it up  on 
Linux.
