Strange authorization lockup

Hi,

after last sunday's upgrade (on two machines) I had problems with
authorization, which seem to
have disappeared after a reboot.

Basically, one system locked with the X server eating 100 % of the
CPU. Managed to turn off gdm
(through Knoppix, which bootedi smoothly into X, so it's not the video
card), ran a new
dist-upgrade and the system was OK.

The second system which is permanently connected to the net, refused
to let anyone login,
hanging as soon as you'd typed the password (I.e: no ssh login, no
login on console, and no su)

I needed to reboot the system (with crossed fingers) to be able to
login and get dist-upgrade going.

This last system also reported problems in one of the mysql tables
used by twig, ("list-processes"),
which seem to have disappeared after the reboot

Problem seems to have disappeared, but I'm curious as to what could
be going on here ?
Has anybody else experienced the same, or does anybody have any
ideas as to what might have
 happened ?

TimT.
