vncserver wont start gui

Hello:

I am using the exotic bird DeMuDi (multi-media dist of debian).  I 
would like to set this box up as a headless vncserver.  However, when I 
try logging into the server using a vnc client the desktop that is 
loaded is just a grey box with the x cursor.  I have created a file in 
my home/.vnc xstartup, made it executable and have tried putting in it 
various things:

Xsession &

or

exec /etc/X11/Xsession &

I am using fluxbox.

Anyhelp would be appreciated.
