I don't know details of any future plans but judging by past history I would say soon is a little overly optimisitic.

The team maintaining the X Windows System for Debian has been pretty conservative about upgrades, with reason considering X is the heart of the GUI stuff and Debian supports 11 architectures (12 when X86-64 becomes official?). The number one priority is to do releases that are going to be relatively stable on all architectures and some of the architectures do not get a lot of testing outside of Debian.

In the process of making things as stable as they can be patches get pulled from newer releases and you can look at the change logs and see that some of those patches have come from the X.org tree.
