inconsistent downloads, or bugs?

I have to work in Windows untill I can get my Linux system going so I'm
using Nero to burn my ISO CD's. I've had a number of failures (see my other
post of 12.1.05).  I've downloaded md5.exe but there are no help files.
(Nero says it has a verification feature but it doesn't show on my copy).
 I'm forced to d/l with my 56K and it takes up to 40 hours for 1 CD. I have
a resume feature because I'm using Fresh Download. I normally don't lose my
connection  but I do a bit of surfing, mail collection or newsgroup reading
during this time (can this effect the downloaded data?)

Any help  would be greatly appreciated  :-))
