for me, as root

 cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATA

gives:

<snip some interesting stuff>
Linux sg driver version: 3.5.27
Using libscg version 'schily-0.8'.
scsibus1:
        1,0,0   100) 'SAMSUNG ' 'CD-R/RW SW-240B ' 'R401' Removable
CD-ROM

So I put

---

CDR_DEVICE=samsung

samsung=        ATA:1,0,0       -1      -1      burnfree

---

in /etc/default/cdrecord.

This works so far with xcdroast and nautilus-cd-burner, and, with ide-cd
in /etc/modules and using udev, /dev/hdc is there. (Don't know if I
still need to explicitly load ide-cd, I've been too lazy to check :)
