Odd sql quoting behaviour in stable after updates?

Hi,

Yesterday we dist-upgraded several Debian stable machines that were
missing several security updates. The updates included perl and mysql.

Approximately 3.5 hours later some perl scripts began malfunctioning,
problems with sql quote escaping. I have little other information.

Current fingers are pointing to the patches as they were the only
changes. However I've not seen anything in the security advisories or
release notes to suggest changes in this area since Jan 03.

Could some kind soul explain this or point me in the right direction
for debugging this matter. We are mystified.
