Re: Re: Debian native java

Hi Tong,

I agree with the suggestions others have made (mainly, use blackdown if you want the most "sun-like" thing).

Yet, I would like to inform you that Free Java virtual machines are making big progress. The latest development version of SableVM (soon to be uploaded into "sid") is able to run Eclipse, as shown at:
  http://sablevm.org/screenshot.html

If you wish to, you can really help by reporting back to Free JVM projects about the success/failure of running your apps on these JVMs. Sometimes, it is just a matter of reporting about a precise bug, which can be fixed in little time, to get your app up and running on these JVMs. Of course, some other times, the app requires yet incomplete major pieces (such as Swing). GNU Classpath (the Free Java class libraries) support support for Swing is yet far from being complete enough to run such beasts as NetBeans. But, hey, you can run Eclipse instead, and develop using the Free SWT. ;-)

In any case, select the best tool for your job, and if you have some time for it, don't hesitate to help Free JVM projects. :-)

Have fun!

Etienne
