How did you set it up? Did you run update-modules? And most important:
Du you use kernel 2.4? If you use 2.6, you need to
change /etc/modprobe.d/sound. If you do use 2.4, make sure that there
is no /etc/modutils/sound with settings that conflict with your alsa
file. Also make sure that discover1 and hotplug, if installed, are
present in the latest versions so the OSS drivers won't be loaded.

Alsaconf won't do much else than changing /etc/modutils/sound
and /etc/modprobe.d/sound. Also, if you ran alsaconf, it is possible
that you now have a file /etc/modprobe.conf, which is empty. Remove
it, /etc/modprobe.d/* will be ignored otherwise.
