If your system boots from pre-compiled binaries, what's the 
problem?

Besides:
1. You're a newbie.  Take a while (many months) learning Linux
   and just absorbing the relevant knowledge.
2. Compiling a modern kernel on a 9 year old box is *painfully*
   slow.  Don't do it unless you really know what you are doing.
