I have had similar problems for a couple of months at least. X doesn't 
want to quite shut down after I log out of it. Happens almost every time. 
Sometimes it helps to wait a while and hit Alt+F1-F5 a couple of times 
but usually not. I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver and XFree86 
Version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8).
