It would depend on the specific product. Some of these products have a back-door
to allow maintainers to log in, or need explicit activation. Some have a
personal and a corporate version.
If you are not knowledgeable in firewall building and you can block all ports on
the dsl firewall except the ones you want NATed, then its probably safe to go
with the firewall on the modem. Its usually (or hopefully) configured by people
that know what they are doing, and you are better of with someone attacking your
dsl modem and not your computer.
