So I tried to install the new kernel like you said but I got a warning
about an existing /lib/modules/2.6.8-1-686. I move this dir to
/lib/modules/2.6.8-1-686.old as suggested by apt(?) and tried again.

This time I got a warning about an unmet dependency for
kernel-image-2.6-686 (depends on kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686) and was
suggested to run apt-get -f install. After running this the new kernel
was indeed properly installed. After a reboot I followed the
instructions of the HOWTO I mentioned earlier and everything went fine.
I noticed a nice splash-screen after restarting X (and gdm) and
xscreensaver-demo now allows me to select 'Atlantis', 'Gears' and
'GLMatrix' which previously complained about missing modules.

So I assume everything is working fine now, although I would like to
know how much FPS I schould be able to expect now, +/- 32 doesn't seam
like an awful lot to me...
(My video-card is a GeForce FX Go 5300)

Thanks for all the help!
