What about using the versions in testing/sarge? This way you could help
test the next version of Debian with your environment.

Anyway, as another recommendation, you can install the free-java-sdk
package and have an environment of development quite good with sablevm
(another *Free* JVM).

Testing both sablevm and kaffe to make sure they work correctly with your
software is a recommended thing for people trying to have Free Java in
Debian.
