its free because most of the software is GPL'd ( the license )
and debian adds/checks for additional restrictions so that "debian" is 
not restricted or violate the various ( thousands ) of originating authors

gazillion more people/corporations provide support and service
of other peoples hw w/ and w/o debian on it

yup ... lots of people using it and providing support etc...

whether you want to sell and support sarge as your "supported stable
version" is another issue ... ( too old ? )

whether you want to sell and support sid as your "supported stable
