Edit you /etc/X11/XF86Config*

Subsection "Display"
   Depth        24
   Modes        "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection

You must add "1024x768"

or 
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
and choose the resolution.
