This has been posted many, many times.  You couldn't do a five-minute web
search?

You can't count on it going perfectly, although it probably will, and Sarge
isn't (quite) Stable yet, so this might not be the best possible time.  In
fact, Sarge is still mutating at a rate of over five packages per day.

Method:  change sources.list.  Run "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade". 
Run "apt-get dist-upgrade" again.  Repeat that last step until it doesn't
upgrade anything.  (In the Potato-->Woody upgrade, you had to dist-upgrade
many times.  I'm told that the algorithm has been improved, so once might be
enough.)

You're vanishingly unlikely to get lost data per se, but a broken system is
not impossible. Of course, you do regular backups, right?
